AFGHANISTAN
The Afghanistan War was in response to the second attack on US soil which was 9/11. The terrorist organization al-Qaeda sent hijackers that would crash successfully into the Pentagon, and both World Trade Centers. This was a failed attempt to create chaos and fracture the US. However because of this tragic event, Americans and many more nations decided wage war on terrorism. This war on terrorism was supported by many. This marked an era in US history that is still being written. Bush pushed the US into a war with Afghanistan after international pressure failed to stop the Taliban from funding al-Qaeda. A bombing campaign began and targeted Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda fighters as well as the Taliban.
The ongoing war has created controversy that creates discussion within the public as well as government. Our national identity is one of protection which is reflected by wars such as these. We have adopted the role of a global policeman which was made a precedent after the Cold War and legislation such as the Truman Doctrine.
